Candles are more than just a source of light; they have evolved into symbols of ambiance, culture, creativity, and business opportunity. The type of candle you make depends on your purpose—whether for home use, gifting, rituals, or business. Let’s look at some of the most popular types:

  1. Container Candles
    These are poured directly into heat-resistant containers such as glass jars, tins, or ceramic holders. They are among the easiest to make because they don’t require molds and are less prone to dripping. In African households, container candles have often been used during blackouts but increasingly are sought after as mood pieces, decorative and scented pieces for living rooms and bedrooms.
  2. Pillar Candles
    Thick, free-standing candles that come in different shapes, cylindrical, square, or sculpted. They require molds and are designed to burn slowly for many hours. Pillar candles are excellent for dining tables, religious events, and wedding ceremonies.
  3. Decorative Candles
    These candles go beyond utility and are crafted for beauty. They can be carved, embellished with pressed flowers, or molded into artistic shapes. Locally, decorative candles are often sold as gifts, especially during festive seasons such as Christmas, weddings, and cultural events.
  4. Aromatherapy Candles
    These are infused with essential oils that release therapeutic fragrances when burned. They are popular for stress relief, relaxation, and meditation. In wellness spas and yoga studios, aromatherapy candles have become essential. Locally, you may see a growing market for lavender, eucalyptus, or lemongrass-scented options, all of which can be produced affordably.

Trends in the Local Markets
Many urban buyers now want “multi-purpose” candles; beautiful enough to display, safe enough for daily use, and scented enough to enhance their living space. Eco-conscious buyers are also asking for natural waxes like soy or beeswax and recyclable packaging.
